music problem
one problem i have is whenever someone asks me if i like the smiths or nick cave or the talking heads, i immediately say nah they suck, and then i realise they were not asking me so we could rag on them but because they do like them and want to establish meaningful connection with me based on a shared interest, and when i realise this i backpedal and start spurning out all the positive qualities i find in their music, and then i try to justify why i initially said they suck, like that only their new stuff sucks, or just their hits, and then i start trying to impress them with my knowledge about the band, mentioning live recordings that are better than the studio albums and praising the side projects of individual band members, and and then i exhaust the extent of my knowledge and start talking about an ex who used to play them all the time which is why i impulsively said they sucked, but then i start worrying about sounding like a bitter ex-lover so i go back to why the music actually does actually suck which is because of the inherently bad musical qualities, but then i realise i am not qualified to make this statement and the songs i make myself are a lot worse and my opinions are baseless, but really i just find certain lines in their songs really annoying or like, i just dont like their vibe, or something, but anyway, i bet you ten dollars that if you ask anyone who knows me if they like a band that i like, they will also say ‘nah they suck’, even if they like them, because hurt people hurt people etcetera.
